Making the decision to drop out of college and move back home was one of the hardest, yet most rewarding, choices I’ve ever made. It wasn’t a decision I came to lightly, but it’s one I feel confident about, and I want to share the reasons behind it. Maybe my story will resonate with someone else in a similar situation.
1. Social Media Became a Viable Career Path
When I started college, social media wasn’t my main focus—it was more of a hobby. But as time went on, I realized I was making money from social media without even trying. The potential for success became clear to me, especially since I’ve seen firsthand what’s possible through my mom (@jettsetfarmhouse). Watching her turn her passion into a thriving career was eye-opening and inspiring.
It hit me that if I put all my time and energy into growing my own brand, I could turn it into a sustainable career. I wasn’t just chasing a dream; I was pursuing a reality that was already within reach. College felt like it was holding me back from fully diving into this opportunity.
2. I Was Homesick
I’m the oldest of five kids, and when I moved out for college, my youngest brother wasn’t even a year old. Being away from my family felt unnatural. I thrive when I’m surrounded by my loved ones, and I missed the everyday moments—the laughter, the chaos, and the comfort of home.
Coming from such a close-knit family, the homesickness was something I couldn’t shake. I realized I’d rather be present for my siblings’ milestones and spend time with my family than be hundreds of miles away feeling disconnected. I had already missed Case’s first steps and words because i was not home. Moving back home allowed me to prioritize what truly makes me happy. I know I won’t live at home forever, so I wanted to make the most of every moment while I had the chance.
3. My Major No Longer Felt Like the Right Fit
I went to college as a Wildlife Ecology and Conservation major because I’ve always loved animals and nature. But as I dove deeper into the field, I realized it wasn’t aligning with my long-term goals. The idea of spending years researching a single species or working in a field with limited financial stability started to make me rethink my path, especially as I began to see the opportunities that social media could offer.
Instead, I started envisioning a life where I could make a substantial income, travel the world, and see as many animals as I could. Social media offers me the freedom to build a career that supports my passion for travel and exploration.
Moving Forward
Since moving home, I’ve poured my energy into building my social media presence, and it’s been a game-changer. I’m able to spend quality time with my family, explore creative opportunities, and work toward a future that feels authentic to who I am. While college is the right path for many, it wasn’t the right fit for me, and that’s okay.
If you’re feeling torn about a big life decision, my advice is to listen to your heart and trust your instincts. Sometimes the unconventional path is the one that leads to the greatest rewards.
